There's something about Curacao. You want to escape to a vibrant, cosmopolitan island full of culture and night life, then prowl the 24/7 world of Willemstad, Curacao's main city. The music scene -- from world-class jazz to Afro-Caribbean fusion -- is world-renowned. Its restaurants -- from secret local kitchens to gourmet getaways -- are some of the best in the Caribbean, and include my favorite eatery in the entire region (you'll have to come along on the journey to experience it!). Of course, the UNESCO World Heritage architecture of Willemstad is hard to forget. But there's also a quiet side to Curacao. Only 45 minutes from Willemstad, sleepy West End, with its fishing villages, beaches and National Parks, ripples with authenticity. Between are restored plantation houses, called landhuises, old forts, ATV adventures, hiking and the rich influence of more than 50 different cultures.

Despite all the topside temptations, it's what's just offshore, wrapped in clear blue water, that will not only surprise you, but also make an escape to Curacao unforgettable. This island is packed with a vibrant, diverse undersea world – there are famous wrecks, walls and mini-walls, caverns and a big world of macro critters. You can dive with dolphins, sea lions (yes, true!) and sea turtles. Eels are everywhere and, if you're like me, you'll spend most of your dive in a small area, uncovering layer after layer of this healthy eco-system.
