GETTING THERE
By Plane
There are two airports on Dominica:
- Melville Hall Airport, the larger of the two, is about an hour's drive from the capital city of Roseau
- Canefield Airport, the smaller of the two, is about a 15-minute drive.
Air travel to Dominica is provided through the following hubs: Puerto Rico, Antigua, Barbados, St. Maarten, Guadeloupe and Martinique. From those hubs, smaller aircraft fly direct to Dominica through Leeward Islands Air Transport or American Eagle. By Cruise Ship
Dominica is also gaining popularity as a port of call on several cruise lines, and cruise ships generally dock at either Portsmouth harbor to the north of the island, or at the Roseau cruise ship berth just steps from the town's shopping, dining and hotel area. Getting Around in Dominica
A car is pretty essential in Dominica, whether you rent one at the airport or hire a taxi to explore the island's many natural wonders. Other ways to get around include bicycles, motorbikes and the local bus. Most packages include transportation from and to the airports, but if you want to go farther than a hike to the beach or to the local river or waterfall, a car or bus is a must. If you decide to drive, you'll need a driving permit which is available from the car rental companies. But be prepared, driving is on the left here.
